In Trust from the Hacker Family. This trophy symbolizes the Corinthian values of sailing and stands for the highest principles of the sport: seamanship, sportsmanship, integrity, fairness, loyalty, and self sacrifice.

At the Key Biscayne Yacht Club, a trophy of profound significance stands not as a prize, but as a testament to our core values. We're honored to be the custodians of The Corinthian Trophy, a magnificent piece lent to us "in trust" by the esteemed Hacker family. This trophy isn't just an award; it's a living symbol of what we believe sailing should be.
The Corinthian Trophy encapsulates the highest principles of our sport: seamanship, sportsmanship, integrity, fairness, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. It’s a constant reminder that while the quest for victory is a legitimate part of racing, it is not the ultimate goal. The trophy asks us to balance our competitive drive with the spirit of the sport itself.
This philosophy is perfectly captured by the legendary sailor Paul Elvström, who famously said, "You haven't won the race if, in winning the race, you have lost the respect of your competitors." This powerful statement is a cornerstone of our club's ethos. It teaches us that a victory achieved through unethical or unsportsmanlike means is not a true win at all, as it undermines the mutual respect that is the foundation of our sailing community.
The way The Corinthian Trophy is awarded further reinforces these values. It is not given to the fastest boat or the best-performing crew. Instead, it is awarded by votes from the regatta's peers. This unique peer-voting system ensures that the true measure of a winner is not just their speed, but their character and conduct on the water. Earning the respect of your fellow competitors is an achievement far greater than any line-honors.
The Hacker family’s decision to lend this trophy "in trust" reflects its deep connection to our club’s identity. From our founders to our current leadership, these immutable principles have always been at the core of what we do. Our leaders exemplify this Corinthian spirit, setting a powerful standard for all our members to follow.
The Corinthian Trophy serves as a beautiful and powerful reminder that our sport is about more than just competition. It’s about building a community based on respect, integrity, and shared values. It challenges us all to be better sailors and, ultimately, better people.
